Factors Contributing to the Changes of Accident Rates in Korean Industries

Abstract
For the purpose of disclosing the influence of socio-economic factors on the decrease of overall industrial accident rates during the period from 1965 to 1993, 18 parameters, namely, 4 categories of accident rates and 14 socio-economic variables, were analyzed by factor analysis method.
The results were as follows:
1. Overall accident rate as well as death and injury rates have decreased, while disability rate increased, during the period from 1965 to 1993.
2. The first underlying factor, which was associated with the change of accident rates, seemed the improvement of economic level that might have raised safety consciousness substantially.
3. The second underlying factor seemed the improvement of security-insurance schemes that might not directly related with economic growth.
4. The change of accident rates was not related with economic growth rate.
